Beware of misleading advertising According to Presto Customer Service

Just a warning as to how this item is being sold. The description says it is a "ceramic" hob, which is likely to worry you if you are purchasing this item. contains no PFOA, but PTFE. PTFE (trade name Teflon) is a generally non-reactive polymer (plastic) used in non-stick materials. Until about 2015, the chemical PFOA was used as a binder to adhere Teflon (PTFE) to metal baking surfaces. PFOA is relatively unstable, but it is believed that most of it is 'burned off' during the manufacturing process, although traces remain. found in most teflon coated devices and easily absorbed into food/body. Many cookware items (like this product) are now advertised as PFOA-free. but most of these items still contain PTFE (they just use a surrogate adhesion promoter/process instead of PFOA). PTFE is not heat stable. It breaks down and releases toxic fumes when the temperature gets high enough. The exact temperatures will be discussed. Dupont, the company that makes Teflon, claims its temperature is around 450 or 500 degrees, but there have been documented cases of bird deaths when exposed to PTFE fumes, even at 350 degrees. Legal action was taken against Dupont for the use of this material. If you have birds, care about your health (PTFE/PFOA are classified as carcinogens) or truthful advertising, I would skip this product. Revain offers a ceramic griddle from Oster that is advertised as PFOA and PTFE free. I would try.
