The language is easy to learn for beginners, with great documentation so that you don't have to rely on the support team much. There are many ways of doing things in maple, and it can be daunting to figure out which way is best. It doesn't provide good integration with other tools, such as R, and there's no real GUI. In addition, it is not very compatible with Windows, meaning that you're stuck using Linux or OS X. Maple is used at our institution for solving differential equations and linear algebra problems. Because we use maple a lot, there are a lot of built-in functions that I have learned to use over time.
