They can only be blacked out if you use a blackout rod and make it long and wide enough. I bought these because they are really red and match the Lego shower curtain I used for the wide closet that has the doors removed. They matched the red Lego almost perfectly. They are long enough on my window to touch the bottom of the window opening. I kept them short as they are in my grandkids playroom at home and didn't want them to get in the way or hang down. I stretched the rod wider than the window so that when I open the curtains I can open the entire window. I need light in the room. I didn't hang them very high either. I believe they get at least 90-95% darker if they are bigger and longer and have a curved blackout wand. The rod and length of the curtains are of great importance for the effectiveness of the blackout. They are very thick and don't want to be left open because of the thickness. I will buy, make or install some kind of mounts so they are more translucent. I think if they were long they would be better left open but the ties would still help the long ones.
