They work very well and prevent scratches. They're unsightly, but that doesn't matter because the plastic has to be thick to be durable. I rated them a 3 because the pens suck. They're quite fragile and not well secured, so my cats figured out how to use their mouths to get the ones we put on the underside of our sofa. This is annoying because then loose sheets have a loose side or two that just hang out there and my friend and I trip over them and scratch our feet. We could live with that hassle, but I'm very concerned that one or both of my cats will end up being injured by loose needles. They are weak but sharp, shaped like a corkscrew that can easily pierce an eye, cut a paw or part of the mouth. I don't even want to think about what could happen if one of them swallows. We're trying to find a way to make them more secure. If we don't find a way I'm not sure we can keep using them, which is a shame because they work so well to prevent scratches.
