Review on πŸ”§ Fowler 52-475-050 Heavy-Duty Adjustable Angle with Warranty by David Dober

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Well made and finished

I'm giving these four stars as an amateur user who appreciates but doesn't demand very tight tolerances. This one Block is made in India and in recent years seems to be doing much better than it used to in terms of machining accuracy and finish It is well machined with no burrs on the working faces or channels of the block - clamp is tight, decent smooth finish, the block's threads are cut correctly and fairly cleanly. I don't have reliable measurements, but using a Czech square 875/00 3" all but one corner line up with no light leakage and I measure the same. with a Starrett caliper - one side is slightly out of square, maybe 0.0015 or a little less. Everything looks nice and flat, of course it seems parallel to me. More than enough for everything I'll do. I'm sure this metal is a bit softer than Starrett or B&S, but it's a good quality tool steel. The clamp is adequate, but here are my shortcomings. These things are never packaged properly so the clip arrived as expected with a good scratch on it. It's steel and has too much paint on it that I'll probably remove and sand down. The leveling bar rotates freely around the clamping screw and can be locked - both end caps are unscrewed. It might not be a big deal but the holes on both of these end caps were quite crooked so the end face would never lay flat and the fine adjustments would wander - I'll be replacing them with something else soon. I think Fowler offers a decent block here. Probably exactly the same as Groz and a few other "brands". I ordered a similar one from Shars which was a little cheaper, made in China and generally very good quality, but I returned it because it didn't have the pin/hole in the channel as its description said. I'm happy with it and imho a good buy.

Pros
  • High precision: sides are parallel and V is centered and ground to 0.0003"
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
