There are two different types of locking mechanisms in the frame. I would like the instructions to say to install the bottom of the frame first. First I made the top part and I had to undo them to attach the bottom part. The direction of use of the strap was odd and I couldn't successfully snap the bottom of the frame into place. I had to put my foot in to hold one end while pulling on the other. It was difficult to attach far enough to snap into place as the lid is very tight (as it should be), but I managed to get it in place in the end. The top frame then consists of two pieces that snap together, snapping in place on the left and right. They detach relatively easily to fold the trunk, but I haven't found a way to unlock the lower frame. I just leave it fully assembled as a shelter. Mr. Midnight agrees as you will see from the photos. The faux fleece lining on the bottom doesn't close like the others I've had so the lining tends to clump. I guess he doesn't mind, so I forego trying to add a little hook and loop. I would recommend the manufacturer to add this to a future design. There is also no place to hook the cord which should help set up the bottom frame so it just floats under the pillow or if you let it through the hole on the outside you can hook it to the carry handle I have not I tried. I've never had a stretcher that opens to the outside. It's big enough for a cat's paw, but not by much, so I don't think it's an escape route. I would make sure to keep an eye on it in case the kitten pulls on it and loosens the fabric. I think the carrier is big enough for two cats who love each other so much. Mine are rarely that close, but I hope so anyway.
