Just got this prism and it separates light into different colors of the spectrum. The angle of the prism with respect to the incident light is critical and must be correct. There was a beautiful rainbow of colors on our back porch. The best example is when the prism is laid on its side in a dark room and then a beam of light is directed from a pen or other source, and yes a white LED flashlight works well. Adjust the right lighting angle by moving the flashlight and you will get a beautiful rainbow on the wall. The angle and distance from the crystal is important. Overall I'm happy with it and would buy it again. Beware of small children playing with this glass as it is very fragile. Cleaning the prism after use is easy with a drop of washing-up liquid. I use Dawn, hand wash in water and rinse. I use a soft cotton cloth to dry. If you're concerned about streaks, use distilled water. It works well on other optics. Do not use abrasive paper towels as they will scratch the surface over time.
