So you need an enclosure for your drives

This is just a short term review, it was only set up for about a week so long term reliability is not available. This enclosure is part of the Orico 35 series of "DIY Storage" enclosures for multi-bay external hard drives **not** RAID. I chose this over the RAID enclosure because I don't need RAID. I also don't want a NAS with insufficient performance (processor/bandwidth). I just need a relatively inexpensive option for installing multiple drives. Pros: USB 3 speed. However, remember that there is only one connection between the case and the computer, and if you access multiple drives in the case at the same time, this connection will be shared between those drives. This means it affects the I/O speed for each drive. Possibility to connect up to three housings in series. This can be useful when you have so many hard drives. At this point, however, you should seriously consider a server-side solution. You're way beyond that kind of decision. CONS: 10-minute automatic sleep mode for drives that are in the case. There doesn't seem to be a way to disable this "feature". You must wait for your drive to spin up when accessing a hibernated drive in the enclosure. No RAID. If you are looking for RAID enclosures then. Otherwise it's really not a problem. There is no mechanism for locking trays with a key. This means you can accidentally remove the wrong tray. A quick note on body fit and finish. The body is made of metal. The drive carrier bracket is made of metal. The front panel and bracket guides are plastic. The discs are attached to the bracket with screws. There is no locking mechanism for the key holder. The fan is relatively quiet when the case is on. You know the fan is on when you have one on your desk. But it's not annoying noise. This is a great direct attach case for storing multiple drives. It's not trendy, but it works.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and bulky
