Review on ๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Xerox XD-COMBO Duplex Combo Document Scanner for PC and Mac, with Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) by Sfl Richardson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The strength of this product is in the software โ€“ BIG!

But first iron. The scanner is compact and light - compact and light enough to carry under your arm and take with you wherever you go. It uses an AC power outlet and connects to a computer via a USB port. I've fed hundreds of pages through the document feeder and the only time it got stuck was when I accidentally fed a torn magazine page with jagged edges, or a page that was wrinkled and needed smoothing out. I bought my scanner in October 2019. and thus the software One Touch 4.6. Once the software is installed on a Windows 7 computer, an icon will appear in the Windows taskbar. Right clicking on the icon will open the One Touch 4.6 dialog with all configuration features. The default configuration (as far as I remember) is Auto Page HQ (pdf), ColorDetect 300 dpi, 8.5 x 14 inches, duplex. Basically, this means you install the software, load the pages into the ADF, hit the scan button (the first photo) on the icon, and the end result is multiple color pages that can be saved into a PDF document. You don't need to read manuals or learn anything to get this far - and to be honest, that's all I did originally to convert a hard copy to a PDF using Abbyy Software (yes it is spelled correctly as indicated on banner) FineReader 12 Sprint, which amplifies what One Touch initiates. The Abbyy window (third photo) opens with the scan. The automatic document feeder quickly turns pages and prints two-sided color in one pass, but Abbyy takes a while to process the scan -- maybe 30 seconds or so to finish a 10-page PDF scan (don't stop me back for a time that also depends on the computer). Once the scan is complete, you can make changes as shown below before saving. The only problem I've found - if you can call it a problem - is that each new scan opens a new Abbyy window. Just close Abbyy after each save so the screen doesn't get full of windows during multiple scans. My photo of the Abbyy window only shows a single side scan, but the left pane is a column showing all sides when multiple scans have been performed. You can scroll up and down this column while adding pages from the previous scan or removing pages from the current scan. For example, when scanning magazine articles, I removed all full-page ads. Abbyy has different features than One Touch, but I've only looked at those that are necessary for my job. I was making changes to the One Touch configuration when I came across a page that contained a night (black photo) with some grayscale and white text. It is clear that in colordetect mode the scanner had problems displaying the original image. I simply created a new One Touch configuration for such sites. New configurations can be created to adjust grayscale, resolution, brightness, contrast and even gamma, allowing you to dive deep into the software if needed. I have yet to find instructions. I included photos of the One Touch icon, One Touch dialog box, and Abbyy FineReader 12 window in the review.
