There was a purple plastic filter but the sediment went through and stayed at the bottom of my cup. I ordered this filter, scooped coffee into the filter, closed the lid, I realized I need to squeeze a strong drink and very good coffee. Now I clean, my wife is very picky and I dump the grist on the counter and floor. Oh my god I got it so yes the cleaning took a while to figure out and yes I still have to rinse the plastic filter and some floors go down the drain but for the most part it's 99 percent compostable and there are no plastic cups to throw in the trash. Easy to use as if thinking of this product to try others to get the best price.
