Update: On a whim I decided to see if it would go for a reprogramming. It works now! I had to post this sequence on YouTube because I never got it right reading the instructions. I'm assuming it can't be specific coding like my OEM, it won't always hold the connection. Although I wish the batteries weren't so dead as I know I can use it as long as it has batteries and if it still doesn't work reprogram it I'm fine with that as a backup. Replace batteries twice. Last time I tried two different ones, fresh out of the pack, and done. Although it held me back until I found my OEM key fob, it's 23 years old, sturdy and doesn't eat batteries.
