Review on πŸ’‘ Westcott LED Ice Light 2 by Ken Reed

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Too expensive but worth it for me.

Like everyone else I thought and still think that Westcott Ice Lights are overpriced so I waited for fakes to hit the market. I bought the Neewer Bestlight for less than half the Westcott price. However, I ended up returning the Neewer and buying the Ice Light 2. The Neewer is brighter and has a separate tungsten panel, but that's where the good stuff ends. Neewer's light was sharp with a very strong magenta hue and required three ROSCO gels (+1/2 green, +1/4 blue and diffuser) to correct the color and soften the harshness. After the gels the light got dimmer than Ice Light so now I had a dimmer light with a do-it-yourself look. As bad as it was, I was still saving money so I was still on the fence until I noticed the lights were flickering on lower power settings and sometimes turning off by themselves, after which there was no doubt it's going back. What about Icelight 2? I knew what to expect before I bought it, it's nowhere near as powerful as a flash, it's not as soft as a giant softbox, forget about shooting at 100 ISO in total darkness with the subject 12ft away . I bought this light to add some ambient light, fill eye sockets and use it creatively. This is where the Westcott Ice Light 2 excels. Kelvin is only afraid of daylight, has no undertone, skin looks fair and doesn't highlight every scar on the skin like Neewer does. However, there are two things I'd like to see in the Ice Light 3: make the USB connector less clunky, have less power when I need a very light touch, and I'll name a third, lower price! 5/5 product, overpriced but I won't vote for that, I knew that. It won't replace my studio light or flash, but it will add another tool to my arsenal.
