I was thrilled to see that Audioquest have released another red and black dragonfly inspired USB DAC/amp. I really like my Audioquest Dragonfly Red (DFR) - I use it almost every day as it's connected to my work laptop and powering my Final Audio Sonorous IV headphones at work. I was hoping for more DFR airiness and tasteful sparkling highs, but unfortunately that didn't happen with the Cobalt. Cobalt is noticeably less airy, tighter, with the separation of the instruments being a bit more audible. I'll say up front that I prefer a more pronounced U-curve in the EQ settings, and the red DFR suits that better. To my ears, DFR sounds funnier than Kobalt. My recommendation to you is to try it yourself. The third time around I found that I had to listen to the product myself as I found no agreement with what the reviewers said better. Go with what you think sounds best. in this respect one would almost have to be careful to compare the two. In general, cobalt sounds like DFR with lower high frequencies to my ears.
