Each strap is approximately 19 inches long and needs to overlap slightly for it to snap into place. The limitation is probably the 4" square railing as you also have to install the hardware from the kit. Obviously they should promote this key information as I almost want to rate the product 2 stars for lacking such basic details. The product definitely works, but you should be aware that it does not fit all railings. I had to connect two straps together to wrap the perimeter of the railing. While this seems safe, it's probably not recommended by the manufacturer and I was only able to protect one side of the box that was supposed to offer two.
