Just bought two of these to use on Burning Man this year. I put 3XAA batteries at home, and even in the evening light on the street, the pattern on the ground is very visible. :) I think if someone wanted to use them as a "headlight" for their bike they would be wrong. The pattern changes configuration several times per second and does not provide good forward visibility. However, by being placed on the front of the bike, it projects an image onto the ground to make the moving bike unmistakably visible, which is my goal in the midst of a pitch-dark desert. The idea is not to get hit by other vehicles, people and bikes. I just hope the lights don't distract the driver. Ha. Also, I don't think my actual spotlight will override the decorative light pattern as they illuminate different areas. I have to adjust the placement with a basket mounted on the front of the bike covering the handlebars. The bicycle clip is made of nicely textured rubber for a good grip. If it slips, stick it with tape or use plastic cable ties. I also love the fact that the light unit is clip-on to deter theft or just for fun in general. I don't want to look at it directly. Tilt it towards the ceiling when you're not on the bike, or lower it to the ground on top of or beside the bike, that would be the way to go. In general very happy with the purchase. I feel like cyclists can't (well, maybe they can) do enough to be visible to others at night. I'd really like to have this on my standard bike at home when I'm not in the dark. If it was more for visibility than fun, I would keep an extra set of 3 AA batteries. I can't say anything about the battery life yet.
