We've recently switched to pine pellet litter, it's great stuff but you really need a strainer litter box. This tray has the best screen size I've found for pine pellets. I have a sieve bowl on top of six empty cat food cans (unusually large 10 ounce like the ones in green chili) so I can scoop the sawdust through the sieve and it falls through without standing or shaking and without sifting. The design of these boxes suggests that you will sift out clumped litter rather than "sieve back" sawdust from dry pellets as is necessary with pine pellet litter. So with pine, you'll probably want to add some sort of spacer between the screen and the drain pan underneath. Two drip pans are handy as you can fit the screen and pellets into one while emptying the other (and putting the spacers back in). The only downside is that this "big" box isn't very good. We have several cats and they generally weigh 10-12 pounds. If you string several together - and the price is high if you have to do it - it might not matter, but pay close attention to the dimensions.
