Review on Conair Style Shine Dryer Purple by Josh Valentino

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works great but GOES BAD

I have bought this dryer 3 times. I think that says it all; For my very thick, coarse long hair, it works better than any other hair dryer I can find. However, this will fail. And they fail terribly, with smoke and fire hazards. So my real rating isn't 4 stars "I love it" but 5 stars for performance, 1 star for durability and construction and 0 stars for the company that makes it. My first one lasted about 2 years. But in the middle of his life he started smoking. For example, I have to dry in the bathroom with the door closed, otherwise the smoke alarms in my house will go off. And the bathroom will fill with a smoky mist. So, yes, it's not perfect and it might not be good for your hair. When it got really high I threw it in the e-waste pile and looked for something else. As I know from other Conair products (Cuisinart) this company is a crappy company that makes products with planned obsolescence that I cannot theoretically support. So I looked for another dryer that could be better. Well I've tried at least 5 different dryers. I read various reviews etc. I've tried different brands, different price ranges, anywhere from $40 to $125, from drugstore to "pro". None of them made my hair as beautiful as this one. This one seems to style and straighten my very thick, textured hair the best, leaving it sleek, silky and smooth faster than any other I've tried. Also, this one is significantly lighter than any others I've tried, easier to hold, and great for travel (much lighter in a suitcase than even "travel" dryers). My hair is naturally very bouncy and has a lot of body, and other blow dryers that have done a good job of straightening or straightening have still given me "big" hair. So after trying half a dozen, I bought this one again against my better judgment. Well recently (about 1.5 years this time) my 2nd passed his really smoky stage when he turned on the smoke alarm. a smoke tentacle coming out of the end of the dryer! Yes. It looked like it could explode at any moment. Throw it back in the e-waste pile and start searching again. This time I was determined not to buy the same junk. So I tried another 5-6 dryers. all with the latest features and good reviews. Again, I tried "professional" and up to $125 (which I find ridiculous to spend on a dryer, but wanted to see if one is better). The 2000W RUSK Engineering W8less Professional Hair Dryer ($79.95) came pretty close and did a pretty good straightening job, but my hair looked very dull. I ended up sending it back and got a KIPOZI 1875W, Nano Ionic Blow Dryer Professional ($37) which was the closest thing to what I wanted. However, it takes MUCH longer, is heavier and my hair is still too thick for me. I think the key is that this one is very, very hot which is why it works so well and also inevitably smokes and burns out. So yes I have now bought my 3rd piece of Conair trash and now my hair finally looks the way I like it in minimal drying time as I absolutely hate supporting a lame company and giving my dollars to a throw away society voices. So if you buy this dryer accept the fact that it will probably last a year at most, but for $20 you can and probably will buy another one.

Pros
  • Excellent design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
