These cable winders are more like cable holders and hold the cable very well. I can't unwind the cable even though the packaging says to twist it counterclockwise. I mean, if you're very, very strong, I'm sure you can turn everything counterclockwise. But the fact is that the twister blocks the winding of the line and so on. Otherwise, keeping the cord out of reach works very well. I actually left enough cord on top to move the blinds to the open/closed position. On the other hand (for raising or lowering the blinds) we use the special tip supplied, which is screwed into the side of the window frame. It really isn't too big/obtrusive, at least if your blinds are the same color as white. All in all, this is a great and affordable child safety product. I definitely recommend it to everyone.
