Review on Samlex SSW-1000-12A Pure Sine Wave Inverter - 1000W, 12V by Flavio Iyer

Save money: jump starters, chargers and portable power supplies

I bought this unit to power a small freezer in my RV when travelling. I used a 600W MSW inverter. I've read that Pure Sine would be much better for the freezer and any other appliances I might want to run. The refrigerator consumes 75 watts when in operation. When I first tried to plug in the freezer it tripped the ground fault. A couple of times I was able to turn on the freezer and once started it would turn on and off as it should. I called Samlex and they told me this was perfectly normal. I should have bought at least 1500 but still no guarantees. I think this should be clearly stated in their description. The manual says the number is about 5 times the operating power. Technical support said that for commercial housing, residential housing can be 10 times more. Even counting like this, I'm still in the rankings. I would not recommend this device. Update: After further discussions with Samlex, it was recommended that the device be sent in for review. I was then informed that it should be shipped to Canada at my expense. Shipping cost $48. They didn't see anything wrong with it. I was able to pay the difference and upgrade to the SSW-1500. Of course I hope this works. If not, then I've lost $400. Had I known returns and warranties have to be shipped to Canada I would never have bought it.

Pros
  • True sine wave power - ideal for sensitive loads
Cons
  • So far so good
