Poor quality leads to tuning issues

After going off-road with friends last year, I bought one of these thinking it was the same as a friend's. However, this has some disadvantages. On higher quality models, the spring is locked because the tab used is on the side of the antenna and not the side of the bracket. So prepare to be constantly prepared for the spring to fall out when you remove the antenna. Also, it was very difficult to remove in winter/summer. It just doesn't seem to me that it has passed the testing and engineering to make it the quality device that exists for the purpose. Having not gone off-road until this summer, I did not try to tune my radio with the change as it was unused, but when I did it was bad. My CB runs an antenna test and an HF test and adjusts the SWR. With this attached to my antenna, I failed the antenna and RF test. My SWR was over 8. I removed the antenna, then this adapter and tried again. At this point my RF and antenna test passed and my SWR dropped to 1.8. While the idea behind it is great, the design and execution of this particular device is not.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
