Review on Quick Release Antenna Support for ICOM 705 ICOM IC-705 by WINDCAMP by Ian Welch

Good idea, a little wobbly

This is a very good idea if you want to use the IC-705 with a mobile antenna in the VFH/UHF band. However, as others have pointed out, it suffers from two disadvantages. First, the thumbscrew that attaches the frame to the radio cannot be tightened enough with bare hands to prevent movement. There are three ways to solve this problem. You can stick double-sided tape on the bottom; pull it up with a tool (and scratch it a little); or replace it with another screw that can be tightened with a screwdriver. The other downside is that the entire assembly will wobble if you don't hold it perfectly level when tightening the screw. in fact, it wobbles a bit anyway due to the fashionable but counterproductive bevel at the bottom of the bracket below the antenna. The tiny radio doesn't compensate for the heavy antenna, and that cutout makes everything less stable. Overall not a bad product but definitely room for improvement. Since you can get it to work with some effort and there is nothing else like it, I'm not giving it two stars.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
