The Little Tool That Couldn't

Kudos to anyone who got a tool that actually worked for them because I really wanted that tool to do its job. Unfortunately the tool was unable to tap a usable 1/2 NPT thread in terms of the correct diameter and taper. I tried TWO tools, the original and a replacement, before I gave up. The first tool cut a thread that only allowed 1/2 turn of the thread to engage. The second tool improved, but still only cut a cone that allowed 1 1/4 threads, which is far from the NPT spec and insufficient to make a watertight seal on the mating part. The problem is that the molded body is shaped. , NOT edited and then colored. Combine this with a stamped die cover and you simply don't have the dimensional accuracy required to insert 4 internal dies to cut suitable threads. In picture 1 you can see a store bought tube with tapered threads next to the tube I cut with this tool. The threaded pipe has too large a diameter and almost no taper. Also, since the dimensions of the internals of this tool are inaccurate, you cannot fit 4 jaws onto the thread gauge and expect them to stay in the corrected position. After a few tries I disassembled the die and folded some aluminum foil to create a spacer between the die cover and the back of the 4 piece die just to see if I could thread a usable thread. (Picture 2) After two attempts to attach the die, I managed to get a passable 1/2 NPT thread, but come on, do you really need to line a new tool with aluminum foil to make it work? , the ratchet actually works very well and the two piece handle is great for working in tight spaces. If they machine the outside diameter of each die holder and then improve the fit of the die cover, this could be a great tool at a great price. Sigh. Be sure to use plenty of coolant.
