I bought this unit to replace an old PS2 reader that has failed. I needed a reader that could be easily reprogrammed so my existing software (which I developed myself) would continue to correctly analyze the resulting information. Fortunately, no changes were necessary. Since the device is USB based, it is much faster than the PS-2 device I used before (I had to slow down the PS-2 device's read speed to avoid character loss). I suspect that this device is not suitable for industrial use (i.e. reading hundreds of cards per day), but for a personal or small business it should be sufficient. Reading a driver's license sometimes skips one or more of the three lanes. If yes, just wipe it again. If the problem persists, the most likely cause is a damaged magnetic stripe, not the reader.
