I have 3 dogs, a big yard and a muddy road. It often rains here too. My tile floors are always covered in dirt. Other doormats I've used either don't hold up sand/dirt or dogs just jump over it when they walk in. Since I've had this rug, my floors have become a million times cleaner. I took one of the wider ones and rotated it to look more like a runner. He got pummeled by one of the dogs this morning (horrible) but I was able to easily hose him down and let him dry on the patio. I think it's normal and it didn't really bother me. You can leave it outside for a day or two at first. Even though it was rolled up for shipping, it lay perfectly flat when I opened it.
