Review on Samyang 12mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Fisheye Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras - Optimized for Full Frame Compatibility by Ray Mcknight

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not as sharp as Canon's L-series lenses, but much better.

I needed a fisheye lens to shoot 360x180 spherical panoramas. I am a commercial photographer specializing in real estate. Normally I would buy a Canon L-series lens and move on, but Canon doesn't make 12mm fisheye prime lenses and their fisheye zoom lens is about 4 times the price of this lens. This Samyang lens (also known as the Rokinon) has a large following in panographer circles, but I couldn't find one used by B&H. I would say this lens has about 90% the quality of a top of the line lens in terms of color and sharpness, but at a quarter of the cost. Other photographers comment positively on the panoramas I take with this lens, so I'm not looking for a better one at the moment. Overall I'm damn happy with it.

Pros
  • cool product
Cons
  • something different
