By the way, on some revisions of the DT880/990 there is no mesh. So it's up to you. Considering that fluff or dust can get between the magnet and the winding, it is better to be safe. But with a plastic guide with a felt ring, which is worn on the back of the speaker, you can experiment. With the ring, the sound is more collected and the bass is denser (In fact, the native character of the 770s), without the ring, the virtual stage is wider and the bass is not so dense (And this is closer in sound to the 880s, they are without this ring).
