Awesome Biological Filter

It's simple, take a giant 30 ppi roll of toilet paper, cut a hole in the middle, add a small clear tube and a weighted base and you have one Bacto Surge. Add an air line and a small air stone and you have a great biological filter. Just? Yes. But it's very effective. They are great for a cycle right from the start as the sponge has direct access to the tank. I ran a new 125 gallon with no fish cycle in 2 weeks. You certainly have a big part in it. Now that I have two very dirty Oscars in the tank, I've seriously considered deleting them. But I can not. The fish love them. They hide behind them, rest on them, collect food from them etc. So they stay lol. Word to the wise, to clean these filters you must gently push them out. Don't overdo it, you want most of the bacteria to stay in the sponge. My advice: DO NOT squeeze into an aquarium unless you have filter feeders, snails or shrimp - what a mess! When doing a water change, take a bucket of old water out of the tank and squeeze it in (then feed it to your houseplants, they'll thank you). Don't use untreated tap water, the chlorine will kill the bacterial colony, and don't keep it disconnected from the water and air system for too long - the food in the sponge encourages the growth of the wrong bacteria. After compression, just put it back in the tank.
