I bought an Indi TDK external DVD burner and tried several DVD brands. The burner worked perfectly with all DVD brands I use (TDK, Memorex, Verbatin). However, I've had problems with Memorex CD-Rs in the past and have noticed that Memorex DVDs are somewhat transparent (very noticeable using a marker on the front), which probably doesn't bode well in the long run. I have burned over 50 TDK DVDs with no problems and played them on various DVD players without any problems. TDK has a very good reputation among DVD enthusiasts, and Indi's Burner is CNET's Editor's Choice (and Sony isn't). It's possible that other reviewers here had other issues that weren't really the result of bad media or hardware.
