Chirp supports this radio - at least when I bought it -

ok. I want to connect a PC to it and use it for BBS/Packet Radio and local calls. The radio works, but it's only as good as your antenna - a $100 GP-1 Comet and good quality cable will go a long way - I got an SWR of 1.12 (pictured above) on my SWR meter when i tested/you don't get some 25 watts but it's close enough. I have about 50-60 field repeaters programmed for my area no matter where I live, I'm on a mountainside not in a hole so I can hit repeaters 50 miles north of me and 50 miles south of my location. Miles. I also have a local fire/ambulance/police department and use this radio as a scanner (second button from top right says /.scan on it - press and hold.) It will scan all programmed frequencies (if you used CHIRP - and it has an S to skip - it will skip that frequency). The only thing I don't like is that the squelch isn't that good on this radio. What I also don't like is that this radio doesn't have a lock function. So if you're scanning and some people are chewing on a rag, you can't ignore that channel like a regular scanner can. It's a cheap radio. I would like to upgrade to 75w in the future and see if my range/range improves. If you want a better radio look to Yaesu but it costs 3 or 4 times more than this cheap one. It's also 100 watts.

Pros
  • great price
Cons
  • not all fit
