READ IT! (06/11/2020) UPDATE #2: Return to 4 stars π . I emailed the address on the booklet and they gave me an apk file that fixed everything! It works on Android 10! Definitely happier! UPDATE: (06/10/2020) I CHANGED FROM 4 STARS TO 2 STARS BECAUSE THE OUTSIDE CAMERAS DO NOT WORK WITH ANDROID 10. BE WARNED. GOOGLE/Android is to blame. CAMERA WORKS GREAT! (This only works on my laptop, no longer works on my tablet/phone as both of my devices were updated today.) ------------------------ ----------------------- I didn't have high expectations for something that only cost $20. Upon receipt, this is probably the best thing I've bought in a long time. I thought this would be a nice addition to our home school for all the fun science projects we do. We are currently breeding monarchs and our new microscope has allowed us to learn more about the caterpillars as they grow. Our children also bring different things, such as other insects, plant parts and even dirt. I managed to catch a grasshopper that had just hatched. It was interesting to learn about a grasshopper's legs. (The picture is included with this review, you can also see how it's slightly blurry.) We've only had it for a few days and it was definitely fun. Why 4 stars? A few "small" reasons that weren't big enough to warrant a 3 star rating. First, there are absolutely NO instructions on how to use a microscope, only how to download a program to use it. It's definitely trial and error to learn how to use. The first problem I had was using one of the buttons. There's a button on one side that says 'Zoom in', I have no idea what it's for. The only thing I notice is that when I press it, the focus seems to hold long enough to take a photo. Otherwise your guess is as good as mine. The button on the other side says "SNAP" which snaps a picture, no problem with that. I have a little tip: if you want your picture to be really sharp, use the external camera button on your mobile phone or laptop/tablet instead. The dial above 40x and 1000x is part of the focus and not the actual magnification you are using. There is a dial on the OTG cable to control the light, it can also be turned off. If you can use slides, you want the light to be down, not up. So being able to turn off the light is actually a good thing. The reason for "40x-1000x" depends on how you use/move the microscope higher or lower over the object, which is very similar to a regular microscope. I would suggest buying a different microscope holder to have more control over the height of the object. The offer is good but limited. Contrary to other reviews, the stand supplied so far does not tip over. Under the stand is a piece of round felt for the "handle". When we started using it, I was using a cell phone. I downloaded an app called OTG View on my Android and it works better than others I've tried through trial and error. However, no matter how well I focused on the subject, I noticed that the images were slightly out of focus. I'm not sure why. I can take better pictures using a DSLR with a macro lens. Then I remember it was only twenty dollars. never mind Note that using it with a cellphone (USB-C adapter included) will drain the battery fairly quickly. Realizing this, we used a laptop instead. Still, being able to use my phone on the go is a good option. Overall, I recommend this as an easy-to-use tool. Especially for our curious kids (and Georges if you have any ;))
