I solved the problem with a utility knife. I trimmed about half of the vinyl from the inside edge of each end cap. Now that those faces aren't really touching, they come together a lot easier and pull apart just as easily. The only trick is that if you're not careful you can cut the metal plug all the way out. There's not much vinyl there. And if you make that mistake on both sides, and if these bald spots meet, and if a tiny conductive piece gets right in that little gap, you've shorted. But that's a lot of "ifs".
