What's the use of buying an external hard drive to back up your files if it breaks after 20 months and you now have to pay a third party received your data? Then you write to the company and they conclude that the hard drive is not working properly because "something physical happened". The only physical thing that has happened to my hard drive is gravity. It's been on my desktop since September 2015. In the same place no bullying, no earthquakes, no hurricanes. Nothing. In April 2017 my iMac stopped recognizing it. I know it wasn't my computer or the cables that were the problem because at the exact same time I bought another of the same WD and it worked fine. Optimistically, the product is 50% reliable. Before contacting the WD team, I visited the discussion groups on their website. It doesn't seem like I'm the only one with this problem. Unless there is an epidemic of external hard drive abuse, I don't see how this could be customer error. So I ended up buying expensive hardware to protect my data and the hardware fails in less than two years. (very) careful use. Now I have to spend more than the hardware cost to get my data back. Figuratively speaking, my data was stolen by WD and I have to pay a ransom to a third party to get my files back. What confidence do I have now to buy one of their products again? And the worst thing is that these guys are considered the best out there. A very scary thought. Sure, I'll pay someone to recover my files, but when I decide to send the drive back to WD for replacement, it's mostly on principle, because I don't expect to use it to protect important files.
