Great bass for hip-hop/dance, not so great for rock

These things pack great percussive, resonant bass. Best headphones I've ever heard (I've tried about 10 phones in the $50-$200 range). These things make hip hop/rap/dance/disco/techno/soul feel right. Sounds and feels like I'm in a club or in a gangsta woofer car: boom, boom, boom! The high frequencies are very present but smoothed out and allow long listening as they avoid the hard edges of the ears with high frequency sounds (they are clear but soft). Much, much more forgiving than my Grado. Because of the clarity, these backgrounds are also suitable for classical and soft singer/songwriters or other things that do not contain bass as an essential part of the music. OR if the music has almost no bass. Now for the bad news: these aren't the best backdrops for rock, electric guitar music, or any other material where the bass plays a significant but supporting role in the song. The focus on bass in the background makes such music unfamiliar and sometimes annoying. The mid-range frequencies of the backgrounds are also dampened, increasing the anti-rock effect. However, these backgrounds will make any BOOTLEG or other poorly recorded live performance sound MUCH better, since such recordings usually suffer from a lack of bass to begin with. I am deducting 1 star for this reason as it prevents it from being a versatile everyday phone. More bad news: These things are pretty tight on your head. I had no problem using it for a few hours at a time but my girlfriend fell asleep in it and when she woke up she was in VERY pain. Also note that the ear pads are attached to the headband with a very thin/small piece of plastic. When I tried to push on the sides to loosen the vise, this piece of plastic broke! So be very careful. Luckily I had an old set of large phones lying around and I just took both ear cups and put them in my old set and it worked! It still sounds the same and I love the new convenience of my Frankenstein phones but I wish that never happened now they are full size and ugly. Bottom line: I would buy them again just because they make my hip-hop/techno sound so great (and switch to Grado for my rock).
