I bought a used Sangean PR-D9W at a reduced price as I have owned a PR-D7 and have enjoyed it for 6 years. Revain placed an order for a used D9W and the unit arrived like new with all accessories and paperwork. Even the box looked like new. The D9W is similar (very well) to the D7 in design and build, but takes up much less space. The D9W has a locking switch that the D7 doesn't have, making it more suitable as a compact street radio. The D9W features electronic volume controls + and - on the front panel, as opposed to the D7's nostalgic side dial. Nineteen preset stations can be stored in the D9W's memory, compared to ten on the D7. You can cycle through any preset with a single control on the D9W, while the D7 has five preset buttons per band for instant access. Station frequency and time are displayed simultaneously on the D7 and are toggled by a button on the D9W, which remembers the last setting when the unit is turned off. Both radios have a lighted dial with a battery level indicator that turns off after a few seconds. With D9W you can adjust the light intensity. Both radios have above-average AM/FM tuners with an extendable FM antenna (I rarely have to use it). AM uses an internal rod antenna. These radios have an alarm clock with a snooze function. Any radio with a mono speaker will provide stereo sound through the headphone jack. A great feature that both radios share is the ability to charge NiMH batteries inside the radio using the included power adapter. D9W uses four AAs and D7 uses six. The most notable difference between these radios is that the D9W includes a weather band with a warning, hence the W in the name. It works very well and is instantly accessible via a button on the front. Other radios with weather bands that I have used had a muffled sound so the volume had to be turned up for the weather and down again for the regular radio. This does not apply to D9W. The sound level is constant in all areas and the weather area becomes clear and distinct. Overall, I believe the D7 is capable of a fuller sound experience, especially when listening to music. I'm glad I have both the Sangean PR-D9W and PR-D7 and can recommend both. If small size, mobility or weather conditions are important, get the PR-D9W. If you only want your radio on a shelf and you prefer a fuller sound, choose the PR-D7. You can't go wrong with either one.
