Well, it worked in the end, but not without drama. I have a 2004 VW Jetta. Firstly, to be clear and hopefully obvious, you will receive an uncut key so you will need the services of some sort of locksmith anyway. Second, I called Pop-a-Lock. -- national locksmith -- cut and program the key for me. I made the mistake of not testing the key before it went and of course I ran into this problem the next day when I went to work: it started for a second and then immediately turned off. I called AAA naturally suspecting it had something to do with the new key but after it turned out it was NOT the battery they could only offer to take it to my garage of choice. The guy from the shop hooked it up to the computer and confirmed the error - the key. {Apparently this is a security measure by VW to make it harder to steal VWs.) So, long story short, I had to bring the Pop-A-Lock guy back and reprogram it. Luckily, my workshop employee didn't charge me for it. and luckily the Pop-A-Lock guy figured it out.
