Review on Enhanced Vornado Element A2 Air + Steam Humidifier: Auto Refill Notification, Aromatherapy Ready, 2 Gallon Capacity, No Filters Needed - UPGRADED by Jordan Ford

Does not work with hard water

I liked this humidifier for about a week. Vornado says it has a 24-hour max capacity of 4 gallons, so that was 2 fills a day. No problem. Mine was dispensing 8-10 gallons a day, that's 4-5 refills. It was tedious, but at first everything worked out great. The instructions say to use citric acid to clean, the cleaning light came on and voila I cleaned it. The problem is that it doesn't clean well. Two and a half months later I clean it every 24 hours and it's still a problem. Initially, with a much longer soak in citric acid than the instructions suggested, mineral scale detached from the heating element. Instead of 5 minutes I tried 15, then an hour, a couple of hours and then in the afternoon. The mineral film has become so thick over the course of a few weeks that it simply cannot separate properly from the element, which then clogs the outlet and the moisture level drops. As the power level drops, gurgling noises begin. Not bad, for us it was like white noise. Others may be concerned. Oh, and the silicone cups on top and under the heating element were bubbling - as other reviews have mentioned - and I'm wondering if this has something to do with the limescale not coming off. I could switch to distilled water but that would be 10 1 gallon plastic pitchers a DAY and the waste involved is huge. But since the production is now less than 2 gallons per 48 hours, I'm giving it up completely. If I lived in a soft water region I would definitely try it. With hard water, however, this is a mistake.
