Turns out it's just a filter, not an aerator, so it doesn't soften the tap water to avoid splashing. If you have junk in your water lines it will catch it, but if you want a real aerator then this isn't the case. I'm sure there is an actual aerator somewhere on the Revain website, but I gave up and went to my local hardware store. The best aerators have either air vents on the side of a piece of metal that screws into the faucet, or a complex, multi-layered plastic combination of screens and some sort of round piece of plastic (don't like my spec sheets?) that runs between the screens.
