black leather. The paint peeled off as it untangled when I lowered the spool halfway to the end. I have ordered other colors and they all break very easily with a little stretch. I'm not even sure if it's real leather! In addition, when the package arrived, there were many holes in it from the shape of the coils, as shown in the picture.
