Like many things imported into this country that are not labeled properly or appear not to be what they really are, these "Air Stones" are made of carborundum! What is carborundum? It's a "stone" made of silicon carbide, or what we call "sharpening stone" in this country - when people sharpened their own tools and knives. Obviously they are man made, quite dense and heavy. One of two "air stones" that I bought. one of them was not properly drilled and did not let air through. It went straight in the trash. The other requires so much air pressure to force air through to form bubbles, I had to combine two air lines (from my four way aquarium air compressor) into one line to get enough air pressure to create air bubbles for the fish. bottom line? This is a commercial material that is recycled for use in 'aquariums' - which is why they recommend using an incredibly powerful air compressor to blow air onto these 'air stones'. The description of these items should be rewritten to say EXACTLY what they are made of and that the manufacturer recommends replacing them every 6 months - in line with the documents that came with the 'stones'.
