Review on πŸ“· Pentax K-5 II 16.3 MP DSLR Body Only (Black): Unparalleled Performance in an Old Model by Rebecca Biddle

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Is there a better one. Although, of course, it will cost much more.

I have been with friends and family for many years and have Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and Pentax. I wanted a replacement for my excellent, albeit limited, Sony NEX-5n. The choice of lens, the lack of a viewfinder, could never really make friends with the electronic viewfinder, which was an option on the NEX-5n. Sold this combination and moved on. Moving to his new home in the Northwest. I wanted a camera for activities I enjoy watching, fishing trips, sightseeing etc. The Canon T5i was a popular choice with its touchscreen, small size and affordable price. I needed great portability, great build and low price. Ready to buy, call it good! Then I came across the Pentax K-5II. Here's a camera I've been looking at for a long time but couldn't afford. I liked everything but the price! To be fair, Canon and Nikon were the same. So Revain bought it for almost half the price. Couldn't resist. Bought without looking. What nonsense, I thought. But as they say, crazy as a fox.My cursory observations.Build quality. Perfect. Reminds me of my old Nikon D200. But much easier. A good thing. The 75-seal magnesium alloy body is very comfortable to hold. Dials, switches are easy to use. The size is a bit small but slightly larger than the Canon T5i I was planning to buy. Taking a closer look at the battery grip, my big hands should be there. It couldn't be easier for me to use and operate. Compared to Sony it's just well thought out with minor things that I don't really care about. However, I would like the shooting mode, i.e. multi-shot with self-timer etc., to be more accessible. In addition, the shutter speed and aperture mode are also different from what I used. No big deal, just a mention. With an 18-55mm WR lens, nothing could be better for close-up shots, but not much from a distance and in low light. Good, like my other kit lenses, plus a gasket around the mount. Nothing bad, just nothing special. I'll get a 35mm prime and 70-300 for distance play, the first for low light, bokeh. I like the colors and details best. Better than my Olympus E10 but my E10 has better glass it seems sharper than K5 but focus speed and power make Oly a snail! Great dynamics and excellent shadow detail make my work easy and fun. So there is not much to say here, other than confirming what has been said here by the majority. Very powerful, fun to use, well built, good image quality especially in low ISO light, my favorite DSLR at the moment. My next record would be my Nikon D90 with battery grip and a 50mm f.1.8 lens. I want F1.8 or F1.4 for my K5. Let's see how it goes. Winner and Recommended K5!

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
