For drawing, less for writing

These pens have an interesting consistency. They are somewhere between charcoal and a very soft pencil and result in a very deep black line. Some sort of coating on the outside means you don't get your hands dirty until you touch the tip. While you don't get stuck peeling off the backing paper like you would with a regular charcoal pencil, I wouldn't call it a mess. From time to time you have to take out the razor blade and shape the tip a bit, which is pretty messy. These pencils are not suitable for writing. If you want a writing pencil that doesn't require sharpening, I recommend mechanical pencils. Zebra sells some of these with fairly thick graphite for those who have trouble breaking it with regular ones.
