I have a bachelor's and master's degree in photography but I don't work with it much. In fact, I took a hiatus from photography as an art form for about 12 years, except for a number of projects about two years ago that I did with my camera phone. I've been waiting for a camera with the qualities of the SD990IS for the last few years. I needed a point and shoot camera that fits in my pocket, has >14MP resolution (with fantastic image quality) and long battery life. This is this camera - it has met and exceeded all expectations. While the lens is somewhat limited - and it's not what you'd expect from a DSLR - it's not what I wanted. I took photos in the mountains while skiing, put them together into huge panoramas and printed them out very large. And the quality of these images is amazing. Bought this camera in early December. Charged the battery twice despite frequent use. I bought a 16GB SD card and it was nice not having to worry about running out of storage. I highly recommend this camera!
