Review on ๐Ÿšฟ Top-Install Chrome WingTite Shower Drain Replacement, Ensures Easy Installation and Enhanced Searchability by Vivian Jackson

Thankfully great customer support as installation can be tricky in any situation.

This product works great and I have had no problems with it. However, my setup was tricky. I had a leaking 30 year old Mustee pipe. Removal is problematic as the tube goes straight to the drain cap. I thought it was solvent welding. I contacted Greg from PlumbRite and he patiently and professionally told me what I needed to do. That gave me more confidence that I could take on this role. I thought it would be a good idea to look up the manufacturer and part number. my old stock since they were visible. Musty had a drainage pattern and I saw it was just a screw type with a deep rubber ring covering the tube. (It would have been wise of me to do this before calling Greg.) I put a screw in this seal so I could take it out and pry out the attached seal with a vise. This mustee drain requires the pipe to be high up, about ground level. I had to use an internal pipe cutter on a drill to cut this pipe a few inches. I did this and used an oscillating saw to cut into the gutter casing until it became weak enough to fall apart. Greg told me I needed a length of DWV Sched 40 pipe and a coupler to build the old pipe up to a suitable height for WingTite. The most important precaution is that the position of WingtTite on the pipe during installation must be free to move vertically and the gasket must not be where the o-ring is located. Therefore, if an external coupler is used, you must be patient and measure correctly to cut the pipe to the desired length. An internal joint like the one sold by WingTite is less of a problem, but you still need to keep the seam away from the o-ring. All in all, the installation was excruciating and took about two hours. Nothing was too difficult, just required thought, not being a plumber the fear factor wasn't fun. I think an experienced plumber could do this in about 30 minutes. BTW the metal drain cap is pretty cheap, too small to fit my pan and has sharp edges. On the other hand, note that I've read that some people have had trouble turning screws. I didn't have the problem.
