DO you really NEED a foil knife to open a wine bottle? Of course not. When I lost my foil knife (more on that in a moment), I used a knife or the tip of a corkscrew to cut through the foil and then peeled it off with my fingers. But it's never a good idea to use sharps and pointed objects on a slippery, narrow part of a bottle - and who wants to serve guests a bottle of fine wine with a ragged, jagged rim of torn foil around their necks? - In a twist that takes literally a second, a good foil cutter will gently pry the foil cap over the cork for you to remove. But not all foil cutters are created equal - I've had quite a few - and the Edgy is the best I've used for the following reasons: First, it sits lightly on the neck of the bottle when in the correct cutting position. Correctly installing some other cutting plotters can be a tricky process. Second, a simple squeeze positions the edgy blades precisely on every bottle I've tried, and the cutting discs are really sharp, removing the foil in just a quarter turn or so. With some other cutters I had to vary the compression pressure or walk in circles around the neck before the film was cut. Third, Edgy looks quality and reliable, although I guess time will tell. Now for the red: my other foil cutters have been black, which (trust me!) makes such a small kitchen tool hard to find in a drawer and easy to lose. I bought my Edgy to replace a black foil cutter which I can't find YET, but that bright red color really stands out wherever it's placed. No "Where did I put that foil cutter?!" in my house. Oh, there's an unexpected bonus: the gift box that comes with it is actually very pretty and high quality, which I wasn't expecting, making the Edgy a great value and great gift if you're a dinner guest.
