This recording medium is manufactured by Pioneer. It fits me. All burners are made in China. If they carry an established brand, they tend to have better quality control. As for Linux, I made some bases to try and burn the mkisofs UDF image. I tried K3V. It doesn't recognize the media (50GB) as dual-tiered and bombards it. Using growisofs from the command line resulted in a coaster. I got the right result with xfburn. If you're using Fedora, you need to compile the program from source, which involves adding several rounds of development (configure tells you what you need, one at a time). xfburn works because it is not a frontend for growisofs. With xfburn, I got almost 5x the speed, which is really good. The resulting disc works fine in my Sony Blu-ray player. "Gravity" made me sick and kept the Dolby Atmos sound. You have several customization options. you can go along; a) USB data connection only or; b) data plus another USB connection for power or; c) data plus power supply. I could probably get by with option "a" but - including the burner I returned - I've been a frisbee factory lately and only have a few discs left. I chose option "c" - USB 3.0 data cable plus power adapter. I took off a star because this thing is so damn small which makes it difficult to work with the button to open / close the tray. It's also too bright, meaning its position is affected by the wires attached to it. I think some people will see this as an advantage. Anyhow, I suspect this isn't the strongest and most durable gear you'll have. I just ordered a couple of CDs. Let's see how many useless toys I can still make on Tuesday. I will also try the Nero program in a virtual machine. Bottom line, it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on peripherals these days. The technology can become obsolete before the device fails. The burner I returned (untitled) was almost double the price and terrible. Thing works as expected.
