Measurements in imperial and metric units: When you remove the foam pad, the distance from the bottom of the drawer to the top of the drawer closes for a gap of just under 5/8 inch or just under 3 cm / 15 mm. The foam padding needs just over 1/8 inch or 4mm for your consumables. The spacers are 1/8 inch or about 3mm thick and are shortened in height to accommodate the foam padding. The internal length of the drawer is 14 inches or 35 cm + 6 mm. Drawers measure 7-13/16" or 19cm + 8mm deep front to back. If you have very thick pastels or want to store something else I hope this helps. A whole set of 120 Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils fits in this box plus a little more space. I've included photos showing sculpting tools, Derwent drawing pencils, shading stumps, a general pencil extension, and a thick silicone mold tool with three folded dividers to demonstrate use. Derwent drawing pencils are thicker and longer than Faber-Castell pencils and cramp the mixing stump at the back of the drawer. A set of six Faber-Castell Drawing 9000 graphite pencils fit in and the drawer closes softly with the remaining foam padding. Caran D'Ache Luminance pencils are the same length as Faber-Castell pencils, but have their own box, which I keep in it for the time being. . Prismacolor works like any watercolor pencil. I wanted to show you that you can get away with leaving the foam pad in your desk drawer. When you remove the dividers you can add a pencil for each removed divider and keep them under the foam pad if you like. This drawer is made of birch wood, but the bottoms of the drawers and dividers are made of masonite. Please note the photo shows birch dividers and I was able to remove mine easily. If you intend to store any type of humid environment at all - DON'T. Masonite will swell, so replace those two pieces with real wood, seal them and you'll be fine. There are many ArtBin brand plastic tool cases that are suitable for wet materials. If you don't like birch, paint it. Get creative with this beautiful box! When you receive this pastel box, take it out of the box and put it on the surface to be soiled to air it. Pull out the drawers and foam to speed things up a bit with a fan. This is a fantastic box considering I had alternatives: buy glass frogs, plastic cups, mason jars, pencil carousels, or a bunch of other stuff that doesn't help. Protect your pens on the go and give away valuable work space. I'm moving to another apartment and don't see a need to put them in something I need to take them out of, to protect my pens. This box is sturdier than it looks but weighs a little more when you have your supplies inside. Don't put it on a flimsy shelf and remember that the drawers slide out easily. It's a joy to use and drawers fold easily for work or play. Don't expect to get a mahogany James Bond. Pencil case type when specified and only suitable for pastel colors at a very affordable price. It's easy to set up, convenient and for $24.99 you can't beat the quality of a product made in China. Although they have a bad reputation for poor quality, I got more than I paid for this pastel box and am very happy with my purchase.
