I try to make a habit of taking sketchbooks with me so I can sketch as much as possible. I was looking for a more journal-like book to work in while facing life. This one seemed perfect. Just take a look. COVERS The covers are black rubberized. Not sure if it degrades over time or not, but it's not too sticky, just a touch. The cover also has a purple elastic that marks your page and keeps the other pages in place while you draw with the book open. The binding is strong and allows you to fully open the book for drawing. SIDES The sides are very smooth. I would say it is more like Bristol paper in surface (parchment) but not as resilient to humid environments as some Bristol card stock. The pages come out punched, but the punches aren't so weak that they come out easily, and you often lose them. WHAT IS GOOD TO DO WITH IT? This book is best for sketching with pencil, charcoal, and even fine markers. If you want to use a very light watercolor you can get away with it, but only for small smudges and barely wet. I used a water based marker with a brush on this paper and got away with it for highlighting. WHAT DOESN'T WORK WELL ABOUT IT? found that this paper also tends to hold a pencil more than others. This paper is difficult to completely detach from the pen. CONCLUSION This is a great sketch pad. The spiral binding makes it handy and the size makes it handy for large sketches. Best suited to dry environments and not wet, with the exception of some water-based markers or very light watercolor accents. MY RATING IS FOUR STARS.
