Moderate Book

I recently bought a 1978 Honda Twinstar and wanted it to meet specs if not better before I started rocking it. Once I realized how old the bike is I had to adjust it and do a full check before I started taking the parts apart and tweaking. Clymer's Honda book lived up to my expectations of what it was supposed to do. I'm a beginner in mechanics and most of what I've learned I've learned from working with bikes, reading forums and reading repair manuals. However, many repair manuals assume the reader has some mechanical experience, so they overlook the most basic procedures and use ambiguous terminology. This book is no exception to that assertion. There are small segments in the various sections that are incomprehensible to the novice DIYer; However, the book contains many illustrations. There are many pictures but remember they are black and white. Sometimes the images are not detailed enough or enlarged enough to distinguish what the author is showing/demonstrating. Despite the former, there are enough illustrations to give the reader a guide to follow. I strongly recommend anyone who buys this book or a repair manual to also buy the theory book that comes with the system, which illustrates pictures of the components of the various systems. I used Zimmerman's Basic Motorcycle Maintenance Manual which gave me an idea of what and how I would affect my motorcycle's performance; For example, when adjusting the valve clearances, Zimmermann showed me exactly where to measure the feeler gauge, which was essentially neglected in Clymer's book. Also, I can't encourage enough to be your own researcher. Be sure to use the search forum to find more information on the subject on the web. Don't believe everything you read, but read enough to form your own perspective and opinion. Overall I would recommend this book. It's organized, although initially I didn't like how different bike models like the Twinstar, Rebel, and Nighthawk are mixed up in each chapter. After a while I got into it and started using different bike models as reference checks for each other. Have fun and be careful!
