Review on πŸ—ΊοΈ Enhanced Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver by Michael Caste

Small size, big technology!

A few years ago a GPS mapper cost over $350, today you can get this portable device for less than $150 (after discount). and possibly drive. However, this is not automatic navigation! It does not offer automatic route guidance or verbal navigation instructions. When you pre-enter a route with waypoints, "Approaching turn" is displayed and the compass needle points in the direction. So it's not very functional for driving, but it's fun to use as a speedometer/trip computer. Where it really shines is in the great outdoors. It's the ultimate pointing device! Install it on your bike and it will be the most complete bike computer ever! I use it when kayaking to identify fishing spots and measure my route. I use it when walking/jogging to measure my route. and just out of interest: you can do geocaching with kids! Haven't used it on a golf course yet, with an average accuracy of 20ft it might not be accurate enough. The device is very reliable and easy to use (my 5 year old can use it to navigate to the cache). The joystick is easy to use, but the options are hidden in a submenu. Waypoints can be easily managed and downloaded with Mapsource or easygps. And the included serial cable (although USB would be preferable!). Compared to the Magellan Sporttrak (yellow), this unit is smaller and has more features for about the same price. The size of this unit makes it more versatile for bike and kayak use. Magellan does have a larger antenna, but my test showed the same accuracy side-by-side under tree canopy. I have yet to get the 3M accuracy they claim. It averages about 20 feet, but I've never seen less than 15, even with the WAAS on. Great gadget for outdoor enthusiasts!
