Good product but poor electrical connector design.

I seem to have had mine for over 8 years now. like when I put it on a hard surface. It turned out that the battery contacts are not strong enough to stay in contact with the batteries under all conditions. I sent it back to Garmin and they sent it back in working condition: it doesn't turn off when hit. But when you open the battery compartment, the contacts look like someone took a pair of pliers and bent them a couple of times to make better contact with the batteries: I could do that. Sure…

Works great. for portable GPS navigators

Read many reviews on this site. I tend to focus on low values to see if there is a pattern. You can tell by the date of my review that this is a recent purchase and the unit is an older model (many of the early reviews are a few years old). Based on a number of reviews I read, I was concerned about its ability to pick up satellite signals. I found it picked up satellite signals very well. I started with clear skies and got at least 6 satellites with good signal strength. He soon had my position

they are very bad. Maybe they were when they first appeared.

I have been working on field projects with these units for several years and I have to say they are very poor. When they first appeared they might have been able to compete with other GPS navigators, but now (2014) they seem extremely outdated. If you are in the forest, forget about receiving a signal. In order for them to work reliably, you must have a perfectly clear view of the sky (I've used half a dozen, and that goes for all of them). The screen often becomes fragmented or freezes, making

Great little device but difficult to use in a car

First of all, this is the BEST GPS I have ever used. This little device can do it all: navigation, basemap, map extension, tripmeter, waypoints, etc. It's the perfect grid for hikers, cyclists, and geocachers. Unfortunately, it lags behind in a car in the following areas: 1. The display size is too small. I installed this unit less than 3 feet away from me while driving and it is still very difficult to read the screen. Customizable map/navigation screen options are great, but what's the point…

Average everyday user

. I hike, stow, canoe, and mountain bike and this device fills all of those needs. It's accurate enough to meet my needs, and it's easy to transfer to and from computer mapping programs with the included PC cable. I also have a venture that my 5 year old son uses (yes it has easy to use features) and I can honestly say they are great for both outdoor activities and those who travel a lot. Here's what it can do: Take a walk or bike ride, transfer each step back to your PC mapping software to…

Small size, big technology!

A few years ago a GPS mapper cost over $350, today you can get this portable device for less than $150 (after discount). and possibly drive. However, this is not automatic navigation! It does not offer automatic route guidance or verbal navigation instructions. When you pre-enter a route with waypoints, "Approaching turn" is displayed and the compass needle points in the direction. So it's not very functional for driving, but it's fun to use as a speedometer/trip computer. Where it really…

eTrex Legend: Great value for those with common sense

I bought the Legend from Revain in August 2003 after much research. It was and still is the best value for money for a small GPS. A few months later I also bought a Topo CD. I took Legend everywhere and used it almost every day. Recently the device has had sporadic failures, it is out of warranty and will be disposed of. I had no issues with reception, recording times, display reading, battery life, or using it with my left hand. The Topo software needs an update, but it makes the Legend much…

Good Value GPS / Excellent Performance

After looking at various Garmin models (Vista, Summit, Geko, Venture and some Magellans) I settled on this device, not because it's a real one important device is that will depend in my life, but something new and interesting (e.g. geocaching, travel etc.). I first thought about getting a handheld GPS a few years ago, and at the time it was $300 for a base model with almost no price tag. many features like this. The reason I chose Legend over other models and brands was this: 1- price +…

Excellent value for money and quality.

All my friends who have GPS have this model! I believe this is a testament to the performance and price this model represents. I finally bought a GPS receiver after buying a kayak. I wanted to know how much time we spend planning future trips and wanted to record our trips. It works well as such, but I also use it regularly in the car and on my road bike. I use a suction cup mount and it tracked my honeymoon train ride in Canada which was stuck in a coupe window and I'm amazed at how well it…
